After a focused grassroots effort and a lot of hard work, the General Assistance Medical Care program has been extended. Governor Pawlenty signed the compromise legislation into law March 26, meaning 70,000 low income Minnesotans will continue to receive health care coverage.

With the elimination of GAMC, hospitals face a difficult choice: pass costs on to patients who have insurance or cut services that everyone uses.

What is GAMC?

General Assistance Medical Care provides for health care coverage for very poor adults who don�t qualify for other state or federal programs. Most GAMC patients earn less than $2,700 a year.
